What to Wear For Family Photos

Hey there! I’m Sarah, an Idaho-based photographer. Today, let’s chat about what to wear for your family photos. Trust me, getting this right can make your photos go from good to absolutely fabulous!

Why Family Photos Matter

Family photos aren’t just pictures; they’re treasured memories that freeze moments in time. Picture this: a photo of a family in coordinated outfits with the picturesque mountains in the background. Now, imagine that same photo with everyone in mismatched, clashing outfits, and loud prints. See the difference? Let’s dive into some tips to make your family photos a stylish success.

1) Consider the Location and Theme of the Photoshoot

Think about where you’ll be taking your photos. The backdrop can really set the tone for your outfits.

  • City Vibes: Go for sleek, modern outfits maybe with a pop of color depending on the season or occasion.
  • Lakeside: Soft blues, greens, and maybe a hint of sandy beige.
  • Foothills or Mountains: Earthy tones like browns, greens, and muted prints.

2) Avoid Bold Patterns and Logos

Busy patterns and logos can steal the spotlight. We want you to shine, not the giant logo on your shirt.

  • Keep It Simple: Solid colors or subtle patterns are your best friends.
  • Stripes and Plaid: These can work wonders if they’re not too overpowering. Plaids are so popular for men especially! If you’re a plaid lover try to build other family members outfits around that piece and keep everyone else a solid color to avoid clashing.

3) Coordinate, But Don’t Match

We’re aiming for harmony, not a uniform.

  • Color Palette: Pick a palette and let each family member choose shades within that range.
  • Individual Style: Let everyone’s personality peek through while staying within the color scheme.

4) Stick to a Color Scheme

Choosing a color scheme can make a huge difference.

  • Seasonal Hues: Warm tones for fall, cool tones for winter, pastels for spring, and vibrant colors for summer.
  • Pop of Color: Incorporate an accent color to add some zest. In fall tones of oranges or deep reds can be a beautiful contrast.

5) Don’t Forget About Accessories

Accessories can add that extra flair to your photos.

  • Simple and Timeless: Think scarves, hats, and jewelry.
  • Personal Touch: Accessories can highlight each person’s style and add depth to your photos.

Wrapping It Up

To sum it all up: choose outfits that blend with your location, avoid distracting patterns and logos, coordinate without being matchy-matchy, stick to a color scheme, and don’t underestimate the power of accessories. Remember, the goal is to have fun and capture those genuine smiles and laughs.
